Collaboration Energy

It started with this: Three artists paint prayers for the strength of another…

Three artists- Bill Shumway, Paige Shumway and I in a group at Pegasus Art Gallery, April 2016. My pieces are the two tall totem like ones, and the green one below the portrait Bill did of fellow artist Rick Bartow.

The collaborative potential was there, so we set a date and laid out some paint up at my studio downtown. Sometimes we worked all together in a few hours, and other pieces we took home and worked on individually, taking turns with each one until we felt they were complete. Below are some shots of the work.

There is really nothing like collaborative painting. There is a certain energy, a meeting of the minds…a dance…. For the first piece, our only guideline was to work from the sketches we’d all done at the memorial. We gave eachother permission to paint over one anothers work, unless we stated otherwise. If you want to learn yourself really quick- do a collab- it will clear up who you are immediatly. We worked well together – with ease and delight.

New Studio Space- A flashback to Fall!

IMG_3279Whoa! So I never hit “publish” on this post, and….8 months later, I am quietly reflecting on having this studio space and having now been a stop on the Corvallis Arts walk for 7 months now and met the most amazing artists and members of our community. Your support and enthusiasm has been lovely.

I am sad to say that Laurel has only one more month with me as an art roomey- and I am searching for another art-partner to share my space come this August. But I thought I’d look back and see what a fantastic few months it has been!

Waaaay back in October of 2015…… I had….

Keys in hand, car packed… ready to unload and set up! What an adventure its been this past week! Super excited, beyond excitement to announce my new studio space with local artist Laurel Thompson. If you don’t know her work, you should! Fellow illustrator and a fantastic muralist!

We’re setting up shop and can’t wait to invite you in!

This is an AMAZING SPACE smack downtown on second street, across from Old World Deli.

A little hub of art is happening here and I love it!

We are sharing the building with other awesome artists such as the wonderful and inspiring Brittney West.

Across the street is the long time local art and frame shop- Pegasus Gallery, Cyranos Book Binding, ShadowSmith, Kaleidoscope Beads and Azure Gallery. Could you ask for a more artistic little corner?

This space is also part of the well known local artist- Nelson Sandgrens old studio. We are so lucky to have part of his mural still on the south wall. Its been said this was his prototype for the much larger mural he did down at the Eugene Airport! Wow! love it.

It’s been a great sunny space, perfect for painting and playing… Stay tuned as we’ll be sure to have lot’s going on and want YOU to be a part of it!

Luck and love,

~R

Making Space

Everyone needs personal space. For creative types, we may sometimes need a little more  space…

Its been months since I had that space, since we’ve been packed and moved and now unpacking. It took about 4 hours, but I’ve made decent progress on creating my studio in our garage!

As I was sweeping, lifting, moving and shuffling furniture, boxes and the like, it occurred to me that I was doing more than just creating a physical art space- I was also creating mental space. With this space comes my commitment to carving out more creative time in my life, more contemplative, quite times for myself. Here in this garage, I hope to “check in” more often with myself, my intentions, my creativity and thus aid in my grounding, regrouping and revitalizing.

…………………………………………

Here’s what I had to start with: 1/2 a one car garage, with no insulation 🙂 But I think I’m going to like it, and am so grateful for so much creative space!

Here are a few pics in progress.  I would not let go of the dusty roll of 6×9′ linoleum I’ve had since 2008. It went along with me on all four of my moves since – from across states to across town, and all around. Looking back it seems silly to tote around that roll for so long, but I bought it to create a small painting space at my first tiny apartment and kept that dream with me (along with the dusty linoleum!)

Now its finally in place!

(the linoleum!)

Here is the overall half of the garage by the end of the day…. it still needs more organizing, maybe some wall shelves, and more decorations but it’s a great start!

I placed my drafting table under the window for some illustration space…

On the far right is a small prep station that was in the garage when we got here. It has a few wall shelves and has re-purposed old kitchen cabinets and a section of the kitchen counter.

In the center I made an area for messy paint and my easel! So happy to see the easel out for good, not folded up and collecting cobwebs in the corner!

To the left of the easel is my large black desk; the perfect space for multiple small paintings and more detailed work.

I can’t wait to complete my work day tomorrow so I can retreat to this desk with a mug of hot tea and my paints! 😀

Here’s to making space!
