Coastal Energies

RockawayEnergyPainting_RachelUrista Sharing a work in progress today and a journal page focused on that great rejuvenating energy we find at the rugged Oregon Coast.

When I draw, journal or paint landscapes, I am not just reacting to what my eye sees. I paint the energy of places…their past, their present… I sense it in the wind, I sense it in the ground of a place. There are certain places in nature which draw me in, whispering on the winds about their true nature…I feel compelled to paint and paint and mix and weave until I have captured a bit of the essence of a place. RockawayEnergy_Close2_WorkInProgress_MixedMedia_RachelUrista RockawayEnergy_Close1_WorkInProgress_MixedMedia_RachelUristaAcrylics, spray inks, Adirondack inks, and acrylic inks, origami paper, antique papers (from the 20’s) and fiber paste on canvas. Working away at this one, and will post images of the final painting!

Below is a finished Art Journal page.

Open Soul Painting • June Workshop

OpenSoulPainting_JuneWorkshop

This past weekend, I had the honor to co-teach Open Soul Painting with Dana Emerson of Open Soul Communications and guide our students in creating these amazing paintings. With the wise words and guided meditation with Dana, we really got to the heart soul of the workshop. By listening to messages from within, honoring and working with our creativity, we coach you to bring fourth personally enriching images and messages.

It is truly special to be working with Dana of Open Soul Communications and to be working with each of YOU to guide you to a place of freedom, inspiration and soulful expression.

Keep an eye out for our next Open Soul Painting workshop this Fall.

Until then, happy creating!

Sometimes the most effective way to communicate is to express your imagination and discover yourself with color, symbols and imagery. In these workshops, we will guild you through painting, for a more spontaneous expression and exploration of your inner worlds, thoughts and emotions.

Let Go

ImagineCoffeePainting_Working3_RUrista ImagineCoffeePainting_Working2_RUrista

There are times when I need to get out of my own art routine…I savor moments painting and creating in my journals. Yet there are times when I feel I need to switch it up, work in a completely new manner, and go with the inspiration of the day.

On this particular night, a few weeks ago, I packed up a few sheets of paper, a few paints and pastels, my rather large jar of black gesso, and headed out to meet fellow artist friend at our local coffee shop. I had nothing in mind, no preconceived ideas. I just knew I needed to let something out. I needed to move, to stand, use my entire arms in long sweeping motions and short choppy ones and just make marks on the paper.

Working in this manner, I tapped into my emotions, letting them guide my movements, and then let them go. Out of chaos emerged several symbols and eventually a beautiful, strong and fierce face. Who knew when I started what the final painting was going to reveal?

Do you have a method for “letting go” and a form of creating which has no rules? Where you can be free from constraint? I’d love to hear about your process.

Journal Spread: Dance Your Fingers

Weave_byRachelUristaDance your fingers upon the page.

Slap, pound, push the paint to the beat of the drum. Freed from the brush. Smudge, smear. Tenderly I feel out the edges around each fingertip. Words float in, and float out. Some stay. A small mountain range emerges from the edge of the page and stretches out. Rhythmic strokes, circular dance.  One hand, then two, then three emerge…Weave… weave…weave. The painted pages smile, they are the sun shinning forth from my hands.

New Journal Spread: Back to Nature

BacktoNature_RUristaJournal0913_large

This spread came after a plein air art session with a friend. A simple sketch surprised me, and evolved into a deeply expressive journal spread. It made me realize…sometimes we stumble upon something we didn’t realize we had lost. It had felt like ages since I had simply sat in the grass with my sketchbook, under the trees, protected from the mist. No words, just a simple connection to the present moment, a connection to the real nature of things. Sometimes, a simple plein air sketch can transport you closer to your own self than you had ever imagined. Sometimes, a simple return to nature can be, if we allow it,  a return to your own true nature.

41st Annual Corvallis Fall Festival

RachelsFFDisplay4

This weekend, I had the honor of participating in the 41st Corvallis Fall Festival with the Temporary Artists’ Guild.  Although the weather was so severe the second day was canceled, we had a good turn out Saturday and it was wonderful to meet new people and share my work.

Our booth displayed the works of 9 local artists in the guild. Here are a few shots below of our booth, and a few close ups of my display.

Each painting is unique, with layers and layers of vintage papers, ink washes, acrylics, colored pencil, graphite and gel pens.

Layer upon layer I worked, creating a little piece of Oregon on each canvas. Each scene is a reflection of my time spent on the Coast and also in Central Oregon in the Cascade Mountain Range. Travels in this state are breathtaking and inspiring and I hope my pieces can share a bit of my world.
