SALE! Wanderlust Online Art Workshop

Maybe you have already heard about the exciting, inspirational journey in mixed-media and art journaling that I’m teaching a section of next year?

It’s called Wanderlust and it’s a year long online course that includes 50 videos from 26 different teachers, (full list here: http://everything-art.com/Wanderlust/Teachers/ – and I’m one of them!)

My portion will cover mixed media painting, focusing on chalk pastels and pencils…Very excited to make scrumptious and yummy tutorials for you! I absolutely LOVE chalk pastels and worked with them in the past quiet a bit. Vibrant, with distinct textures, they can be the final POP on a mixed media painting.

Pencils and graphite are more versatile than you would think! Dark lines, thin or thick, soft or aggressive graphite really can be distinct and stand out in mixed media paintings. Oh Boy! I’m getting exciting about these materials just writing this! More details on my class to come.

Wanderlust 2016 has a promotional price until the 15th of December 2015. You can buy the whole Wanderlust 2016 course for only $100 (£65 / €89). After this date the regular price of the class is $152 (£99/ €137), so don’t hesitate and grab your seat now to enjoy the whole of 2016 with inspiration.

Workshop Inspiration!

ReclaimClassImages!_ArtJournalWorkshop_RachelUrista Workshop #2 of the year, “RECLAIM”

Connection, energy and inspiration fueled the day and creative sparks were flying!

Each student brought joy, energy and inspiration to the group.

It was particularly joyful to have those who had never done Art Journaling before. They were bold, brave and lent a fresh energy. Meeting friends I’d before only know online was another highlight of the day.  Meeting in person was a blast!

In hearing my students, it is becoming clearer that there is a real need to carve out space for our creative selves to expand. Our creative urges are not going to go away. We are, by nature, creative beings, and ignoring this urge is unhealthy.

Art journaling has the potential to open up this creativity, allowing us space and time to reconnect to this part of ourselves.  From simple to complex prompts and techniques, Art Journaling can open a door towards self-discovery and healing. I sincerely look forward to the next workshop, for the chance to continue to create space for each student to explore their creative self.

024StudentsJournalPage_RUristaStudentsJournalPageClose_RUrista Isn’t it awesome how I only had a few colors, yet everyone’s pages look uniquely their own!

Art Journal Workshop • A Journey back to Creativity

RUristaArtJournalWorkshop_Jan2014

Yesterday I held a great art journaling workshop at Imagine Coffee.  A really fantastic way to start off at the new venue!

Everyone did really great work! Best part by far- seeing students reconnect with their creativity. Watching them as they splattered paint, ripped paper and played with colors brought me so much joy!!! What wonderful energy they brought to the workshop!

Art Journaling really has great capacity for good! Heart is feeling full. I humbled to be a part of their creative journey.

Alive with Beauty • 2014 Art Journal Workshops

“We were sent into the world alive with beauty. As soon as we choose Beauty, unseen forces conspire to guide and encourage us towards unexpected forms of compassion, healing and creativity.” (John O’Donohue)

—-

It is far too easy to believe the idea that only the chosen few are artists. We are all creative.  All beings desire to make a mark, change our landscape or bring an idea to life.

The creative state is the natural state for humans. We do so each day in many different ways and in many forms.

I wish to empower each individual to reclaim their own creativity. I believe art journaling can be a practice for reconnecting and claiming your creativity.

Anyone can experience the benefits of art journaling. The act of writing, drawing, putting hands to paper or making marks are all powerful forms of expression. Art journaling has the capacity to bring about clarity, direction and balance within the individual. Our journals can become a safe place for free expression.

In addition, art journaling is just FUN! It’s a great way to release stress, to play, and to explore materials and mediums.

Hope to meet you at one of my workshops!

Happy Creating! ~ Rachel

Imagine Coffee  is a wonderfully inspiring coffee shop. They are super supportive of the arts, and have live painting several times a week. They host local art shows as well, and regularly have local musicians. The classes are held in the large conference room in the back, so we will have our own space, away from the main floor.

In addition, 10% of the proceeds of each class are donated to charity.

Map Obsession • Art Journal Demo

InSearchFullSpreadUristaRI discovered a way to save and work with all those maps I keep and love.

Since I was small, I’ve loved maps…I would pour over an Atlas for hours, dreaming about foreign lands and how immense the world looked to me. It was one big adventure!!

Recently, my love for maps resurfaced and had a great time figuring out how to use them in my journal…here are a few “In progress” images below… Please excuse some of the blurry photos.

PaperAndLovelyMaps

All those maps!! All those lines, colors and shapes. Patterns emerge, and retreat…What better use for them than in my journal?

PaperLayeringMaps

Glued in, a few washes of paint and some ink splatters…. Layering and washes continue below…

Washes_Maps

When dry, I attached a note for myself and boxed out areas for writing.

And thats it! Antique, modern and personal all at once! Hope this sparks some ideas for you and your journaling process.

Happy creating!

Live Painting – in the Window!

Photo May 25, 12 26 35 PMPhoto May 25, 11 38 28 AMThe other week I had an opportunity to do some live painting in the window of our local art store in downtown Corvallis, The Drawing Board.

It was a neat experience-partially hidden, partially exposed… It was a bit different than being out in the open at a coffee shop or art opening, but I was right at home amongst all the art supplies!

Check out more of my process below. I’ll be holding an acrylic painting class at the Drawing Board June 14th where we work on a smaller version of a mixed media acrylic painting and I’ll walk you through each step.

Artfest 2012

I’m just now getting around to posting pics from Artfest back in March. It was amazing, incredible and so inspiring. It was also my very first Artfest, and sadly, the last one held. I am really grateful to have experienced it. Three solid days of art classes, seeing old friends and making new friends at Fort Worden in Port Townsend, WA. Below are a few images of the location. We were up on a hill overlooking the ocean, it was the end of March and oh so cold but the beauty drew us outside to explore.

I had amazing classes. Below are a few images from them.

Day 1: Vintage Village Color Books with  Lisa Bebe

Here are my pieces following her instructions. 🙂  So much fun to learn new ways of combining materials. We used printed photos, ink washes and paint. I think they came out pretty awesome!

Day 2:  Flexible, Stuffable Journals with LK Slattery Ludwig

After a very  process driven day before, the second day was pure messiness!! Paint splattering, stencils flying quickly between our hands, paper folding, needles stitching… it was a whirlwind of creativity! I never finished the complete book, but I did finish the canvas cover, and many many amazing painted papers. I had a blast.

Day 3: Obsession or Collection with Roxanne Padgett.

Awesome culmination of a lot of techniques. We made a small book, stitched up some inside pages, and even made our own beads to string onto the spine of the book. I almost finished, but not quite! I had brought many papers and images I had collected over the years and was able to mesh them all together!

Earlier that morning, I had met a few other ladies down at the beach to take a walk thorough the salty air before the days classes began. The shore was strewn with driftwood and rocks…one of the ladies sang “cockles, and muscles….” and the fog was just starting to lift, it was very peaceful. I didn’t have my camera, but I was able to save my ocean memories by working in sand, seaweed, and driftwood to the books pages.

I’ll end this with a few sketches I did when I got home. After a few days away from routine, it was hard not to daydream about the misty hills and warm cozy classrooms buzzing with creativity!

Happy Creating…Stay Inspired! 🙂
