Journal Spread • Rainbows Under Water

JournalPageFull_Rainbows_RachelUristaJournalPage_LoveBloomsJournalPage_RainbowsIn this spread, I worked with layers of pastel, spray inks, gel pens and black gesso. We’ll work with these materials in this Saturdays Art Journal Workshop at Imagine Coffee.

Woven into the layers of pastel and spray ink are words from another journal of mine- one solely dedicated to poetry, dreams and ideas.  The words in this spread are about the buoyancy of love, its resilience, and its lightness even in the heaviest of moments.

I’d like to swim amongst the background and climb out to rest upon the blossoms, and look into the stars…Care to join me? 🙂

~ Happy creating and may you weave your dreams into your art! ~

Of Prayer Flags, Art Retreats and Art Tables!

PrayerFlags_FinalRachelsMagnets Image 2 RachelsMagnets Image1

Busy busy time just before Spring arrives! I am preparing to go to an art retreat An Artful Journey in Santa Cruz where I will be taking Jesse Renos class called “No Limits” Very excited for this!

I just finished my Prayer flags and sent them in for the retreat also. Cannot wait to see everyones! I had so much fun making them – combing paint ink and a lino-block print on muslin cloth. Turned out brighter and more beautiful than expected! I think I will have to make more…especially for my garden this summer.

Lastly, very happy to announce I will have art for sale at the retreat. I am busy working away at the table set up, mini paintings and itsy bitsy magnets.  Immersing myself in pattern, color and textures…

Hoping this brings some spring color to the last of these winter days!

Spring Canvases

4″ x 4″ each, Acrylic and Ink

I’ve been working away in my new garage studio and now the pieces are finally out in the sun and for sale at  STASH downtown Corvallis!

As plants and flowers all around me begin to bloom, my eyes soak in all the colors and textures. I love creating these tiny worlds, all the color and feeling of a spring day, contained in a 4″ square!

I am working on more sizes, variety and magnets!  Until then, I hope these provide you a little sunshine and spring color on  those grey days between the sunny ones!

I am happy and proud to say, I finally made them!! 😀

Sakura Tree Painting 桜

The Sakura Painting is complete! 😀 I wanted to share some of the details.

I used pine cones and twigs to create organic textures for the blossoms, and built up the tree using various papers and fiber paste. The glass beads are hand placed and individually glued. I think all of this resulted in a highly textured dynamic piece! I am so pleased with the outcome, it felt like the tree was coming to life!

Processes

Process or processing (verb) typically describes the action of taking something through an established and usually routine set of procedures or steps to convert it from one form to another”  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki)

I think all paintings carry the history of its making if you look close enough!  I wanted to share with you some of the history of this Sakura Tree piece – or the process of taking it from idea to finished painting.  This was one of the first sketches, you can see the tracing paper flap was used to position the blossoms on top of the intricate branching patterns.

Here is one of the first painted sketches…. I had fun creating the texture with natural sponges, pine cones and what ever else I could try. Eventually I would use pinecones and branches on the final piece to help break up the monotonous texture of the blossoms I was getting with the brushes…

In looking back on the process of this painting, you can see and feel it when looking at the edges… looking back in its history.  It really hits me when I am doing the final touches, and painting the sides of the canvases, sealing it closed, completing the piece.

… In the end, the clean crisp dark sides of the painting seemed to complete it- it was almost ready to hang!

A little inspiration! 😀 Sweet Peas from the local Farmers Market! Fresh flowers and plants always energize me.  Now to position the glass beads!

Just about there! 😀 I really loved creating this piece, it was such a good challenge and so much fun!  I hope the painting is enjoyed as much as I enjoyed creating it.
