Alive with Beauty • 2014 Art Journal Workshops

“We were sent into the world alive with beauty. As soon as we choose Beauty, unseen forces conspire to guide and encourage us towards unexpected forms of compassion, healing and creativity.” (John O’Donohue)

—-

It is far too easy to believe the idea that only the chosen few are artists. We are all creative.  All beings desire to make a mark, change our landscape or bring an idea to life.

The creative state is the natural state for humans. We do so each day in many different ways and in many forms.

I wish to empower each individual to reclaim their own creativity. I believe art journaling can be a practice for reconnecting and claiming your creativity.

Anyone can experience the benefits of art journaling. The act of writing, drawing, putting hands to paper or making marks are all powerful forms of expression. Art journaling has the capacity to bring about clarity, direction and balance within the individual. Our journals can become a safe place for free expression.

In addition, art journaling is just FUN! It’s a great way to release stress, to play, and to explore materials and mediums.

Hope to meet you at one of my workshops!

Happy Creating! ~ Rachel

Saturday, Jan 18th • FIRST ART JOURNALING CLASS OF 2014!

@ Imagine Coffee, Corvallis

Have you ever wanted to try Art Journaling? Why not start now, at this time of renewal in the New Year.

It’s 2014, and the possibilities are endless, the script has yet to be written. Let’s take this opportunity to slow down and focus on our intentions for 2014. Similar to “vision boards” we will be art journaling as a way to create altar spaces.

Altars are places of veneration, places we create for honoring what we find important in our lives.  We make them sacred by defining the space.  I create 2-dimensional altars inside the pages of my journal where fill the space with thoughts and images I believe sacred, or wish to honor.

One of my favorite quotes is by Julia Cameron (author of The Artists Way)

“As you move toward a dream, the dream moves toward you.”

What dream would you like to move closer to you this year?  It could be a goal, such as a skill you want to learn, it may be a person, or simply a word.

Don’t have a specific goal/intention in mind?

No problem! I’ll provide images and words as prompts to get you started.

In this two and a half hour workshop, we’ll play with paint, paper, images and gel pens. Layer by layer we’ll create “altar” spaces in our journals.

Please join me in the spacious conference room at Imagine Coffee in Corvallis this January and we’ll dig right in!

Just bring one unlined journal or sketchbook, a few printed images of your choice and I will bring the rest.

Sign up by emailing me at rachelurista@gmail.com -OR- drop by Imagine Coffee or call them at 541-286-4340.

Best wishes for a Creative New Year for you!

Growing a Tree – Art Journaling Class

Photo May 31, 3 38 38 PM

This was a class  I taught earlier this summer at The Drawing Board in downtown Corvallis.  I had so much fun, we had so much fun! I loved seeing how students took the instructions and ran with it, creating their own unique pieces…

How expressive and freeing it can be to let go of the outcome, and just create. Sharing this love of journaling and giving others the tools and confidence to journal on their own was a blast!

TreesJournalClassStudentsWorkPhoto May 31, 1 54 09 PM

Students work was great! They really got into it!

Photo May 31, 3 36 27 PM

Below are a few images showing some of the basic steps… This was first taught to me by Orly Avineri, but I have made my own modifications. Check out her blog to see her fabulous work!
IMG_5732

Paint, and adding texture. Shown here with brush strokes and a dry paper towel. I try to choose contrasting colors, and limit it to 2-3 colors.

IMG_5737

Over the paint, I layered some papers and did a light wash to tie the whole thing together….You can see the paper underneath the ink in the photo below.

Next, pour, splash, scratch out the wet ink! Have fun, be spontaneous, let go and let the ink do its thing!
IMG_5782

Glueing in leaves, inking on top and dotting more paint. Again, I limited my paint colors, to match the original underpainting colors and tie it all in together.IMG_5788

Once it dries, I just keep layering ink and marker to define leaves and other fine details. Have fun and make it your own!

Map Obsession • Art Journal Demo

InSearchFullSpreadUristaRI discovered a way to save and work with all those maps I keep and love.

Since I was small, I’ve loved maps…I would pour over an Atlas for hours, dreaming about foreign lands and how immense the world looked to me. It was one big adventure!!

Recently, my love for maps resurfaced and had a great time figuring out how to use them in my journal…here are a few “In progress” images below… Please excuse some of the blurry photos.

PaperAndLovelyMaps

All those maps!! All those lines, colors and shapes. Patterns emerge, and retreat…What better use for them than in my journal?

PaperLayeringMaps

Glued in, a few washes of paint and some ink splatters…. Layering and washes continue below…

Washes_Maps

When dry, I attached a note for myself and boxed out areas for writing.

And thats it! Antique, modern and personal all at once! Hope this sparks some ideas for you and your journaling process.

Happy creating!

Heading Back to the Studio!

Just returned from a three day workshop retreat in Port Townsend, WA. Inspiration and gratitude in full force – more about that soon!

But first; another class tonight! I’ve enrolled in an Oil Painting class with the local community college, the first college course I’ve taken since graduating with my Illustration degree. I am thrilled beyond words to head back to the oil painting studio. Some of my favorite memories of college were the hours in the painting studios…the caked on layers of paint on the old thick rusty metal easels…the scent of turpentine and spirits…the soft glow of the spotlights on the model or still life in the darkened room. Concentration and imagination filled the air. Completely opposite of the florescent lit chair filled lecture rooms that filled the rest of my schedule. Yes, the studio classes were always my favorite retreats.

Below are a few of my favorite paintings from my early oil painting classes. I am ready to start today, learn more and keep the creative ball rolling!  Looking forward to sharing more of my work as the class progresses!

What are some of your favorite college classes? What moments do you crave and cherish from your school days?

ARTFEST 2012- Signing up for Spring!

Spring break is here at the college town and my own art-filled Spring is just beginning!

The final count down is here… Two days and we are off to PortTownsend, WA for ARTFEST 2012!

(Copyright TeeshaMoore http://www.teeshaslandofodd.com/artfest/info.html)

Three full days of intensive artful workshops! I am really, really excited to finally go! My good friends have been going and teaching for a few years now and have been urging me to go for a while now.

I will be taking three specific classes:

Day 1: Vintage Colorbook by Lisa Bebi

Screen shot 2012-03-25 at 12.01.21 PMimage credit Lisa Bebi

Ohhhhhhhhh so yummy dreamy colorful and emotional ways to use acrylics. Can’t wait to have some specific tools in my pockets and my dreamy visions here in Oregon can come to life on canvas!! 😀

Day 2: Flexible Stuffable Journal by LK Ludwig

Screen shot 2012-03-25 at 12.01.18 PMimage credit LK Ludwig

Incredible! Can’t wait to stitch and fold. I have made my own books before in college, and they are labors of love! Ready to jump back in and learn new techniques! So fun to be able to make my own sketch books and journals, customize the paper and create custom covers. I’ve been gathering the supplies for this one, and lovelingly fingering different papers, already stitching and folding in my minds eye.

Day 3: Collection or Obsession By Roxanne Padgett

Screen shot 2012-03-25 at 12.01.13 PM

heheee! This one is right up my alley. I naturally collect twigs, rocks, sand and shells from all my favorite places.  To have a place, to create something from these items of obsession is going to be great! 😀 I have been collecting more than usual in preparation for this class. Take a look below for some of my newest favorite places and collections…
