On Display at Art Department, Inc

Do you  know about  Art Department Inc, in Salem, Oregon? If not, you should! 😀 This is my favorite art supply store in Salem, and now I work a bit dangerously close to it (just down the street!) It puts me in proximity to some fanstastic supplies, fellow artists, and also, art classes too!

Chalk pastels, oil pastels, sold by the pack or individually, colored pencils, markers and an awesome selection of my favorite FW Inks! Great assortment of professional acrylic paint colors…Great calligraphy tips and vast array of decorative papers….oh, also wood cradled boards, and other cool tools for artist like spatulas and tons of encaustic materials. In short, everything you could want, for whatever little niche or mixed media fetish you have!

This store is great at supporting the local arts. They showcase an artists work on their walls each month, and for the month of February, I’ve been fortunate to have over 20 pieces of my work on display up at the shop. I think they did an EXCELLENT job at hanging the work!

The show is up until Feb 26th. Salem peeps, friends and artists, take some time to drop by the store, check out the art, and browse some excellent supplies too.

I hope I’ve given you several good reasons to stop in at this awesome art store!

My little Spring Fox….how cute that they set it up on the counter… and some of my paintings on the wall above…

A wider view of the paintings… I’m always surprised at seeing my work all together- I usually see it in the studio, in groupings as I work… it is nice to pause and look up! 😀

Here are more shots of the store and more of my pieces on the wall.

Do you see that Sumi-E brush? Oh my gosh, I’d LOVE that- it has to be 36″ long!

The Place I’ve Been Before

wisteriamountain_rachelurista

The Place I’ve Been Before, by Rachel Urista, 2017   Acrylics, spray paint, origami papers, acrylic markers, colored pencil, oil pastel on birchwood panel.

This is the first finished painting from the batch of four 48″x48″ panels I’m working on. Rather large and heavy for me- but I felt the deep need to work larger than I have before.

The piece went through many transformations, as much of my work does. It moved from abstract color, texture and expression, to cities in the wind, to mountains where the wisteria grow, and sacred shrines are hidden. I felt the sense of place and atmosphere come together with this one- and felt it was a space I know. Curious feeling! Though not unknown, perhaps, by other artists and poets, whose work carries them to a certain obscure, yet familiar territory.

Let Go

ImagineCoffeePainting_Working3_RUrista ImagineCoffeePainting_Working2_RUrista

There are times when I need to get out of my own art routine…I savor moments painting and creating in my journals. Yet there are times when I feel I need to switch it up, work in a completely new manner, and go with the inspiration of the day.

On this particular night, a few weeks ago, I packed up a few sheets of paper, a few paints and pastels, my rather large jar of black gesso, and headed out to meet fellow artist friend at our local coffee shop. I had nothing in mind, no preconceived ideas. I just knew I needed to let something out. I needed to move, to stand, use my entire arms in long sweeping motions and short choppy ones and just make marks on the paper.

Working in this manner, I tapped into my emotions, letting them guide my movements, and then let them go. Out of chaos emerged several symbols and eventually a beautiful, strong and fierce face. Who knew when I started what the final painting was going to reveal?

Do you have a method for “letting go” and a form of creating which has no rules? Where you can be free from constraint? I’d love to hear about your process.

Saturday, Jan 18th • FIRST ART JOURNALING CLASS OF 2014!

@ Imagine Coffee, Corvallis

Have you ever wanted to try Art Journaling? Why not start now, at this time of renewal in the New Year.

It’s 2014, and the possibilities are endless, the script has yet to be written. Let’s take this opportunity to slow down and focus on our intentions for 2014. Similar to “vision boards” we will be art journaling as a way to create altar spaces.

Altars are places of veneration, places we create for honoring what we find important in our lives.  We make them sacred by defining the space.  I create 2-dimensional altars inside the pages of my journal where fill the space with thoughts and images I believe sacred, or wish to honor.

One of my favorite quotes is by Julia Cameron (author of The Artists Way)

“As you move toward a dream, the dream moves toward you.”

What dream would you like to move closer to you this year?  It could be a goal, such as a skill you want to learn, it may be a person, or simply a word.

Don’t have a specific goal/intention in mind?

No problem! I’ll provide images and words as prompts to get you started.

In this two and a half hour workshop, we’ll play with paint, paper, images and gel pens. Layer by layer we’ll create “altar” spaces in our journals.

Please join me in the spacious conference room at Imagine Coffee in Corvallis this January and we’ll dig right in!

Just bring one unlined journal or sketchbook, a few printed images of your choice and I will bring the rest.

Sign up by emailing me at rachelurista@gmail.com -OR- drop by Imagine Coffee or call them at 541-286-4340.

Best wishes for a Creative New Year for you!

41st Annual Corvallis Fall Festival

RachelsFFDisplay4

This weekend, I had the honor of participating in the 41st Corvallis Fall Festival with the Temporary Artists’ Guild.  Although the weather was so severe the second day was canceled, we had a good turn out Saturday and it was wonderful to meet new people and share my work.

Our booth displayed the works of 9 local artists in the guild. Here are a few shots below of our booth, and a few close ups of my display.

Each painting is unique, with layers and layers of vintage papers, ink washes, acrylics, colored pencil, graphite and gel pens.

Layer upon layer I worked, creating a little piece of Oregon on each canvas. Each scene is a reflection of my time spent on the Coast and also in Central Oregon in the Cascade Mountain Range. Travels in this state are breathtaking and inspiring and I hope my pieces can share a bit of my world.

New Journal Page – I Shut My Eyes

Journal_ShutMyEyesRU2012I made this spread last summer, but realized I never posted it. Sometimes journal pages become so personal, I hesitate to share them right away. There is a lot going on in this one. Lately I have been wanting to get back into working this way. I am having so much fun with my coastal mixed media paintings, but underneath, images and thoughts like this are always flowing like a river. It’s good to check in sometimes. How do you “check in” with yourself? How do you express it?
