At least a year ago I saw the Dragon boat art show on facebook through friends. It looked amazing! I had missed any deadline to apply but fell in love with the theme and became fascinated with the boats too! Fast forward a year and I see the Dragon Boat Art show pop up again…but this time, the deadline is just a few days away- I thought, Darn! close but no cigar! I’ll have to wait till next year- but then– the deadline was extended- I had another shot at it! I wasted no time and got right to work.

YES! I jumped right in. I knew I saw the dragon and I DID.First dragon (really!) even though I love myth and magic and have been exposed to them all my life.

As the painting progressed, the dragon grew gnarly and powerful…

Early stages

I decided to hand build the frame. I did a float mount- and a nice black lacquer molding- about 1 3/4″ thick. I turned out great! I can’t wait to keep building out frames for my work- it felt so polished and finished. Heres a look…

Finished and framed!

On Display at Art Department, Inc

Do you  know about  Art Department Inc, in Salem, Oregon? If not, you should! 😀 This is my favorite art supply store in Salem, and now I work a bit dangerously close to it (just down the street!) It puts me in proximity to some fanstastic supplies, fellow artists, and also, art classes too!

Chalk pastels, oil pastels, sold by the pack or individually, colored pencils, markers and an awesome selection of my favorite FW Inks! Great assortment of professional acrylic paint colors…Great calligraphy tips and vast array of decorative papers….oh, also wood cradled boards, and other cool tools for artist like spatulas and tons of encaustic materials. In short, everything you could want, for whatever little niche or mixed media fetish you have!

This store is great at supporting the local arts. They showcase an artists work on their walls each month, and for the month of February, I’ve been fortunate to have over 20 pieces of my work on display up at the shop. I think they did an EXCELLENT job at hanging the work!

The show is up until Feb 26th. Salem peeps, friends and artists, take some time to drop by the store, check out the art, and browse some excellent supplies too.

I hope I’ve given you several good reasons to stop in at this awesome art store!

My little Spring Fox….how cute that they set it up on the counter… and some of my paintings on the wall above…

A wider view of the paintings… I’m always surprised at seeing my work all together- I usually see it in the studio, in groupings as I work… it is nice to pause and look up! 😀

Here are more shots of the store and more of my pieces on the wall.

Do you see that Sumi-E brush? Oh my gosh, I’d LOVE that- it has to be 36″ long!

Joyful • Art Journal Pages

Sometimes you have to let go of controlling your art, and let the color and forms carry YOU. These two journal spreads were a joy to create, and make me smile whenever I see them. You see, I wasn’t trying to capture each petal and leaf- I was capturing the beauty and freshness, growth and energy from the plants and the feelings they stirred up in me.
A closer look at the layers of paint, inks,  graphite sticks, gel pens.

BloomFull_MixedMedia_RachelUristaBloom1_MixedMedia_RachelUristaBloom2_MixedMedia_RachelUrista

Working intuitively with colors, I built up layer upon layer of acrylic paints and origami papers for the backgrounds. I love layering paint and scratching or mark making on top of it- it creates a sense of energy. From this, I glued in some fabric leaves, and worked with Dylusions spray inks and stencils to add depth and pops of color.

Tracing over the fabric leaves and adding stems with a waterproof black marker pulled them out to the foreground. I adore doodles and line work- so naturally, I had to add in fun bubbles, flowers and waves with a white gel pen.

The end result: joyful pages! Is this something you would try? Happy creating!

I am incredibly excited to present to you videos with instruction of the following workshop.

••• Dream Voyages •••

Come with me as we journey into our dreamscapes. Recreate dream like worlds, those mythical, magical, spiritual places we visit in daydreams and journeys; both waking and sleeping. We’ll use antiquing methods to create a vintage and celestial setting for your dreams to be expressed in this realm! In this workshop, we will discuss image selection and how we can capture synchronicities and symbols in our lives and how to be open to their messages. I will guide you through my method of symbolic writing and prompt you to do stream of consciousness writing based off your image selection.Using tea staining techniques, we’ll create a personal scroll for you to attach to your pages where they create a unique space for storing and exploring messages.Rich with symbolism, color and texture, I will guide you through a playful dance and voyage through our dream worlds.

Original Art Sale | Holiday Gifts

Hope everyone is having a great Holiday season and staying warm!

Looking for a Holiday Gift? Here at Artful Journeys, I have the solution!  Beautiful paintings at an affordable price. Each piece is a hand painted original and no two are alike.

Each is a mix of vintage papers and prints, layered with several ink washes. Then I lovingly paint a favorite scene from my beloved Oregon, from the coast to the mountains, lakes to valleys. Each one is etched with words of intent, original poetry and musings. Lastly, whimsical tree figures add grace and personality to each landscape.

Spread 007 – The Way

Various papers, old newspaper, acrylic paints & ink

I don’t always know where a spread will lead me. I start with a background, and work organically, instinctively building it up. And this one came together just like that…. The quote summed up not just a way of life or religion, but also a way to create – from the heart.
