Collaboration Energy

It started with this: Three artists paint prayers for the strength of another…

IMG_6361

Three artists- Bill Shumway, Paige Shumway and I in a group at Pegasus Art Gallery, April 2016. My pieces are the two tall totem like ones, and the green one below the portrait Bill did of fellow artist Rick Bartow.

Then this.

FullSizeRender_1FullSizeRender_3 copy

Our sketches at Bartows Memorial in May, 2016 at the Newport Performing arts center. Mine is the bottom one, the Eagle Person.

The collaborative potential was there, so we set a date and laid out some paint up at my studio downtown. Sometimes we worked all together in a few hours, and other pieces we took home and worked on individually, taking turns with each one until we felt they were complete. Below are some shots of the work.

IMG_6666 copyIMG_6658CloseupFullSizeRender_1 copy 2

There is really nothing like collaborative painting. There is a certain energy, a meeting of the minds…a dance…. For the first piece, our only guideline was to work from the sketches we’d all done at the memorial. We gave eachother permission to paint over one anothers work, unless we stated otherwise. If you want to learn yourself really quick- do a collab- it will clear up who you are immediatly. We worked well together – with ease and delight.

Currently, most of these pieces are on display at OSU, Along with many other collaborations and some of our individual work:
A Plethora of Crows II

Maybe you have already heard about the exciting, inspirational journey in mixed-media and art journaling that I’m teaching a section of next year?

PDX Workshop with Jesse Reno

A little peek into what I’ve been up to this month. About a week ago I got back from a 5-day advanced workshop with Portland Artist Jesse Reno.

These are the thoughts that come to mind: Amazing community, vein of light, movement,  growth and potential.

I had been waiting almost 2 years to do this workshop, having taken only a 3 day workshop with Jesse a few years back. This way of working speaks to me at a deep and personal level.

I came home filled to the brim with personal insights, support, inspiration and also many, many tools to keep growing as an artist and a person. I highly recommend Jesse Reno workshops if you are serious about working in an intuitive, abstract manner, and ready to dive in to that abstract, intangible place within and see what messages & myths are waiting for you.

…more images soon! 🙂

Coastal Energies

RockawayEnergyPainting_RachelUrista Sharing a work in progress today and a journal page focused on that great rejuvenating energy we find at the rugged Oregon Coast.

When I draw, journal or paint landscapes, I am not just reacting to what my eye sees. I paint the energy of places…their past, their present… I sense it in the wind, I sense it in the ground of a place. There are certain places in nature which draw me in, whispering on the winds about their true nature…I feel compelled to paint and paint and mix and weave until I have captured a bit of the essence of a place. Dreams • Journal Page

Copyright 2014_RachelUrista_Mixed Media Painting_DreamsareReal_Art Journal

I have been fascinated with dreams since I was a young child. I still have vivid recollections of dreams from age 5 on. I religiously kept a dream journal in middle school and high school, something I still practice today (though with less frequency).

Dreams give us rich language of colors, themes, images, majestic landscapes, and alternate realities.  Fleeting, intangible, powerful, moving, we have much to learn from our dreams….but how do you capture a dream? Is it a color, a scent? An image? All of the above?

Opening Up • Open Soul Painting Session

OSP_MayClassaFull

A few weeks ago Open Soul Communications and I teamed up for our second Open Soul Painting workshop. What an amazing time! I want to send out many thanks to each participant, who trusted our process and brought their creative fire to the day!

The theme this round was “Open.” You can see the definition and images that emerged where vastly different for each person. We explored this broad theme by asking, what does it feel like to be open? What colors express ‘open’ to you? What are you opening up to or would like to be open to in your life and how do you express it?

Painting is a way to capture intangible but no less real elements of our lives such as emotions.  Each painting spoke in a unique way to its creator. Most of us are unaware of what a richly symbolic, colorful and expressive inner life we lead. When we focus on a theme or question and paint, we make space for personal symbols and wild expression to come fourth.

At Open Soul Painting workshops we explore rich themes using a simple yet effective mixed media process. Save the Date! Our next session is June 28th from 4pm-7pm at Love Yoga Studio in North Albany, OR. Space is limited, so be sure to register and pay by visiting opensoulcommunication.com/workshops

What are you waiting to express? What would YOU paint?

Let Go

ImagineCoffeePainting_Working3_RUrista ImagineCoffeePainting_Working2_RUrista

There are times when I need to get out of my own art routine…I savor moments painting and creating in my journals. Yet there are times when I feel I need to switch it up, work in a completely new manner, and go with the inspiration of the day.

On this particular night, a few weeks ago, I packed up a few sheets of paper, a few paints and pastels, my rather large jar of black gesso, and headed out to meet fellow artist friend at our local coffee shop. I had nothing in mind, no preconceived ideas. I just knew I needed to let something out. I needed to move, to stand, use my entire arms in long sweeping motions and short choppy ones and just make marks on the paper.

Working in this manner, I tapped into my emotions, letting them guide my movements, and then let them go. Out of chaos emerged several symbols and eventually a beautiful, strong and fierce face. Who knew when I started what the final painting was going to reveal?

Do you have a method for “letting go” and a form of creating which has no rules? Where you can be free from constraint? I’d love to hear about your process.

Journal Spread • Rainbows Under Water

JournalPageFull_Rainbows_RachelUristaJournalPage_LoveBloomsJournalPage_RainbowsIn this spread, I worked with layers of pastel, spray inks, gel pens and black gesso. We’ll work with these materials in this Saturdays Art Journal Workshop at Imagine Coffee.

Woven into the layers of pastel and spray ink are words from another journal of mine- one solely dedicated to poetry, dreams and ideas.  The words in this spread are about the buoyancy of love, its resilience, and its lightness even in the heaviest of moments.

I’d like to swim amongst the background and climb out to rest upon the blossoms, and look into the stars…Care to join me? 🙂

~ Happy creating and may you weave your dreams into your art! ~

A Journey begins • Collaboration with Open Soul Communication

Open Soul Communication

I am excited to begin this journey with Open Soul Communications and offer you Open Soul Painting Workshops, coming soon!

Come out today to their FREE event: http://opensoulcommunication.wordpress.com/free-event1/   Food, fun, and information on the soul supportive services offered.

As a classically trained artist, I became shut-down by all the rules and set standards. When I discovered mixed media painting and art journaling, I started to open up again creatively…

Since I started teaching workshops in art journaling, I have seen people transformed, just by having the space and permission to create – without judgement, without pressure. I saw students reconnect to their creative side and begin to open up.

Once you start opening up in one area of your life, other areas begin to open as well and growth can occur. That is why collaborating with Open Soul Communication is the perfect match!

Thank you, Open Soul Communications, for this amazing opportunity! I am looking forward to our journey together!

Watch for details on Open Soul Painting Workshops! Coming soon!

Workshop Inspiration!

ReclaimClassImages!_ArtJournalWorkshop_RachelUrista Workshop #2 of the year, “RECLAIM”

Connection, energy and inspiration fueled the day and creative sparks were flying!

Each student brought joy, energy and inspiration to the group.

It was particularly joyful to have those who had never done Art Journaling before. They were bold, brave and lent a fresh energy. Meeting friends I’d before only know online was another highlight of the day.  Meeting in person was a blast!

In hearing my students, it is becoming clearer that there is a real need to carve out space for our creative selves to expand. Our creative urges are not going to go away. We are, by nature, creative beings, and ignoring this urge is unhealthy.

Art journaling has the potential to open up this creativity, allowing us space and time to reconnect to this part of ourselves.  From simple to complex prompts and techniques, Art Journaling can open a door towards self-discovery and healing. I sincerely look forward to the next workshop, for the chance to continue to create space for each student to explore their creative self.

Journal Spread: To Open

ToOpen_ArtJournal_RachelUrista

開ける- to Open. Messages carried over rainbows…

Layering, layering, layering…hand painting, smearing, mixing materials. Organic textures emerge unexpectedly. In this spread, I worked on being aware of the process, letting it guide me rather than trying to controlling it. I am really enjoying seeing where working in this manner is taking me.  Do you work in this manner? See where it might lead you!

Journal Spread: Messages Amidst Mess

RachelUrista_ArtJournal_MessagesJournal_CreaturesVisitCLOSEUP_RachelUrista2013

Playing in the paint…dab, smear, splatter. Getting emotions out on paper, releasing the days stress. What first appears as a mess, sharpens. Images start to emerge. Narratives develop naturally. Messages surface, stop and reflect. Sometimes when emotions and life seem messy, there are messages for us to find within them.

Art Journal Workshop • A Journey back to Creativity

RUristaArtJournalWorkshop_Jan2014

Yesterday I held a great art journaling workshop at Imagine Coffee.  A really fantastic way to start off at the new venue!

Everyone did really great work! Best part by far- seeing students reconnect with their creativity. Watching them as they splattered paint, ripped paper and played with colors brought me so much joy!!! What wonderful energy they brought to the workshop!

Art Journaling really has great capacity for good! Heart is feeling full. I humbled to be a part of their creative journey.

Saturday, Jan 18th • FIRST ART JOURNALING CLASS OF 2014!

@ Imagine Coffee, Corvallis

246855_437799736270639_93296430_nUristaArtClass011814_FLYER

Have you ever wanted to try Art Journaling? Why not start now, at this time of renewal in the New Year.

It’s 2014, and the possibilities are endless, the script has yet to be written. Let’s take this opportunity to slow down and focus on our intentions for 2014. Similar to “vision boards” we will be art journaling as a way to create altar spaces.

Altars are places of veneration, places we create for honoring what we find important in our lives.  We make them sacred by defining the space.  I create 2-dimensional altars inside the pages of my journal where fill the space with thoughts and images I believe sacred, or wish to honor.

One of my favorite quotes is by Julia Cameron (author of The Artists Way)

“As you move toward a dream, the dream moves toward you.”

What dream would you like to move closer to you this year?  It could be a goal, such as a skill you want to learn, it may be a person, or simply a word.

Don’t have a specific goal/intention in mind?

No problem! I’ll provide images and words as prompts to get you started.

In this two and a half hour workshop, we’ll play with paint, paper, images and gel pens. Layer by layer we’ll create “altar” spaces in our journals.

Please join me in the spacious conference room at Imagine Coffee in Corvallis this January and we’ll dig right in!

Just bring one unlined journal or sketchbook, a few printed images of your choice and I will bring the rest.

Sign up by emailing me at rachelurista@gmail.com -OR- drop by Imagine Coffee or call them at 541-286-4340.

Best wishes for a Creative New Year for you!

Rainbows in the Dark

JournalSpread-RainbowsintheDark
OfRainbowsCLOSE_JournalSpread_Fall2013OfRainbows_JournalSpread_Fall2013Journal Spread; Pastels, Marker, ink, and Black Gesso.

I started this journal spread, using pastels and thin ink pens back in the Summer of 2012 but struggled to finish it – so closed the book…so to speak.

I had all but forgotten about this spread until there came an evening, a few months ago, when my friend had some leftover black gesso and a I had a bit of bravery on hand…

This particular combination lead to something remarkable, expressive and symbolic.

Happy Thanksgiving

Blogging from the road! I am in California with family this Holiday. Taking a moment to pause today, step away from the hustle and bustle of the kitchen and garden to give thought to what I am thankful for this Thanksgiving.

I had the images below with me, although they were done some years ago, they are the perfect fit for this Holiday’s theme; Gratitude. I am deeply grateful for my families & loved ones health and well being, for the time spent with family, and friends. Each of you have given me strength, support and fuel my creativity and love and I hope I can do the same for you.

Being here in California, today I am grateful for the beautiful immense bright sky, the expansive ocean, I am grateful to experience this in the company of loved ones.

What would your Gratitude Journal pages look like?

Happy Thanksgiving to each of you and may you have a wonderful time with friends and family!

41st Annual Corvallis Fall Festival

RachelsFFDisplay4

This weekend, I had the honor of participating in the 41st Corvallis Fall Festival with the Temporary Artists’ Guild.  Although the weather was so severe the second day was canceled, we had a good turn out Saturday and it was wonderful to meet new people and share my work.

Our booth displayed the works of 9 local artists in the guild. Here are a few shots below of our booth, and a few close ups of my display.

Each painting is unique, with layers and layers of vintage papers, ink washes, acrylics, colored pencil, graphite and gel pens.

Layer upon layer I worked, creating a little piece of Oregon on each canvas. Each scene is a reflection of my time spent on the Coast and also in Central Oregon in the Cascade Mountain Range. Travels in this state are breathtaking and inspiring and I hope my pieces can share a bit of my world.

Growing a Tree – Art Journaling Class

Photo May 31, 3 38 38 PM

This was a class  I taught earlier this summer at The Drawing Board in downtown Corvallis.  I had so much fun, we had so much fun! I loved seeing how students took the instructions and ran with it, creating their own unique pieces…

How expressive and freeing it can be to let go of the outcome, and just create. Sharing this love of journaling and giving others the tools and confidence to journal on their own was a blast!

TreesJournalClassStudentsWorkPhoto May 31, 1 54 09 PM

Students work was great! They really got into it!

Photo May 31, 3 36 27 PM

Below are a few images showing some of the basic steps… This was first taught to me by Orly Avineri, but I have made my own modifications. Check out her blog to see her fabulous work!
IMG_5732

Paint, and adding texture. Shown here with brush strokes and a dry paper towel. I try to choose contrasting colors, and limit it to 2-3 colors.

IMG_5737

Over the paint, I layered some papers and did a light wash to tie the whole thing together….You can see the paper underneath the ink in the photo below.

Next, pour, splash, scratch out the wet ink! Have fun, be spontaneous, let go and let the ink do its thing!
IMG_5782

Glueing in leaves, inking on top and dotting more paint. Again, I limited my paint colors, to match the original underpainting colors and tie it all in together.IMG_5788

Once it dries, I just keep layering ink and marker to define leaves and other fine details. Have fun and make it your own!

New Journal Page – I Shut My Eyes

Journal_ShutMyEyesRU2012I made this spread last summer, but realized I never posted it. Sometimes journal pages become so personal, I hesitate to share them right away. There is a lot going on in this one. Lately I have been wanting to get back into working this way. I am having so much fun with my coastal mixed media paintings, but underneath, images and thoughts like this are always flowing like a river. It’s good to check in sometimes. How do you “check in” with yourself? How do you express it?

Majestic Theater Art Show

If you find yourself in downtown Corvallis this week, stop in at The Majestic Theater and see my show. I have several original art journal pages up and new mixed media works as well.

We had a great little opening event this past Friday, where I got to meet many wonderful new people, who are so inspiring. It was so sweet to also see many familiar faces too. Many thanks to all who came out and saw the show!

I had several original art journals on display too and had a lot of fun doing some live painting! The show will be up just a little longer, July 29th, so be sure to stop in this week!

Stay tuned for upcoming art shows and chances to see me live paint! I will have a show up in September also in downtown Corvallis, and will have original works up this October at The Beanery on 9th street.

In Print!

InTheAdvocateStackedInTheAdvocateInside This week, I am the featured artist in the Corvallis Advocate newspaper. It was pretty neat to see my work in print around town! It’s a fun little interview with some commentary on my work and a little background about me. I think they did a great job showing all my work! I sure wasn’t expecting the brightest of my work on the cover! 🙂 You can read the online interview by clicking here.

Live Painting – in the Window!

Photo May 25, 12 26 35 PMPhoto May 25, 11 38 28 AMThe other week I had an opportunity to do some live painting in the window of our local art store in downtown Corvallis, The Drawing Board.

It was a neat experience-partially hidden, partially exposed… It was a bit different than being out in the open at a coffee shop or art opening, but I was right at home amongst all the art supplies!

Check out more of my process below. I’ll be holding an acrylic painting class at the Drawing Board June 14th where we work on a smaller version of a mixed media acrylic painting and I’ll walk you through each step.

Spring/Summer Classes @ The Drawing Board-an Update

I wanted to share a few examples of the type of work we’ll do in my classes this summer at The Drawing Board in Corvallis, Oregon.

This Friday, May 31st, I’ll be sharing with you my journey with Art Journaling and we’ll dig right in and get our hands dirty! Below are some examples of what we’ll be working on. All you need to bring is a journal, at least ~9’x5″ and unlined. Please bring a size you feel comfortable with. We’ll build up layers of paint, ink paper and have fun adding our personal touches with words and make our own Trees of Plenty! Get ready to get your creative juices flowing! If you can’t make this one, mark your calendar for Friday, July 12th also at 1pm!

And here are the final pieces…Freshly made.

LivePaintingPanels041313

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to participate in a local art zines launch party. The Midnight Muse showcases all kinds of art in the Willamette Valley. The event was great: a fashion show, poetry readings, dancers, musicians and of course…live painting!  Click here to see their blog. Check out their latest zine, available for FREE download.

I had a blast working on several wood panels while talented local bands played and people checked out the art show. What I really enjoyed most was connecting with people…sharing my process and getting people inspired to create!

These pieces began with a colorful under painting in acrylics, then were layered with ink, graphite and oil pastels. I had so much fun having my friend Jess Graff lend a hand (literally) to the paintings. There is always something a bit magical and unexpected about collaborations that I love.

Stay tuned for more events to come. I will be live painting this May and through the summer!

An Artful Journey Retreat, Santa Cruz

This is a long post! Lots of pictures, and they only hint at the beauty, magic and intensity of the retreat. I spent a total of five days up at the retreat center and traveling, three of which were filled day and night with art-making, close-friends, new friends and self-reflection…Travel, and travel with art especially, can really do amazing things for one’s soul.

I chose Jesse Reno’s workshop at this retreat “No Limitations.” It was a three day immersion in painting, magic, & intuition. You can see his work here JessseReno.com its really amazing art!

As we built up layer upon layer of paint, mask like faces and familiar creatures & symbols surfaced. Learning the power of intention, the power of letting go, painting without a pre-conceived notion was not easy, but was true gift to practice. My pieces came out more personal and powerful than I had imagined…This workshop was incredible and I am excited to see what the future holds!

Of Prayer Flags, Art Retreats and Art Tables!

Image

PrayerFlags_FinalRachel Urista, Table Mock up for AAJ!

Busy busy time just before Spring arrives! I am preparing to go to an art retreat An Artful Journey in Santa Cruz where I will be taking Jesse Renos class called “No Limits” Very excited for this!

I just finished my Prayer flags and sent them in for the retreat also. Cannot wait to see everyones! I had so much fun making them – combing paint ink and a lino-block print on muslin cloth. Turned out brighter and more beautiful than expected! I think I will have to make more…especially for my garden this summer.

Lastly, very happy to announce I will have art for sale at the retreat. I am busy working away at the table set up, mini paintings and itsy bitsy magnets.  Immersing myself in pattern, color and textures…

Hoping this brings some spring color to the last of these winter days!

Hot Off the Press!! And FREE Book Giveaway!

“14 Artist Journals” is finally here!!
-3 -2 ——

A few words from the Author, Orly Avineri:

14 Artist Journals is a wondrous grouping of journal pages from fourteen impassioned individuals. In it I reveal the delicate worlds of creative types for whom visual journaling had become a spiritual practice, an honest and raw expression of who they are. The book sustains my belief that all individuals have the capacity to make changes that are needed in their lives through the act of creating and to find new ways to advance their physical, emotional, and relational well-being. It makes known that art journaling is most definitely one such way.

Art Filled Garden

Fall-2012-Header

It’s winter now, and the sky is heavy and grey. Temperatures are in the 30’s and low 40’s here, frosts have hit and plants are mostly dormant. I came across these photos taken just before fall swept in. The bright colors and lush growth brought me back to those last days of summer, with art filled afternoons in the garden.

Lets take a closer look!

What’s inside your journal? Do you ever step back and look at your notebooks or journals themselves? I find as we fill them and add our life to them, they turn into works of art in their own right. What do you think? Please feel free share a link below to some of your journals and pages. I’d love to see them!

Spread 006 – Kazoku-Family

Found images, Acrylic Paints, printed family photo, Japanese maple leaves, ink

There is so much more to be discovered about my family history. I’d really like to journal about each one of the stories my Grandma has told me about her life in Japan.

I know so little but the more I learn of history, the more I realize what a remarkable time she grew up in and raised a family in. My Grandmother was born in Fukuoka, Japan about 1930 and came to the United States in the early 50s, with my mother (then just a baby) and her American husband.

Some of the papers in here are written by my Grandma – the only papers of her handwriting I have. In these writings, she lists out our family tree. Unfortunately, I couldn’t read much and had trouble following. I really hope someday I can learn more and have clarity about our family. For now I have a few images mixed with my imagination, pieced together from the stories my mother and my grandmother have told.

**Updates** My mother just gave me this update: “Your grandmother was born on March 25, 1924 in Dazaifu, Kumamoto-Ken, Japan.” Thanks Mom!

See where Dazaifu, Japan is on a map here

Artfest 2012

I’m just now getting around to posting pics from Artfest back in March. It was amazing, incredible and so inspiring. It was also my very first Artfest, and sadly, the last one held. I am really grateful to have experienced it. Three solid days of art classes, seeing old friends and making new friends at Fort Worden in Port Townsend, WA. Below are a few images of the location. We were up on a hill overlooking the ocean, it was the end of March and oh so cold but the beauty drew us outside to explore.

I had amazing classes. Below are a few images from them.

Day 1: Vintage Village Color Books with  Lisa Bebe

Here are my pieces following her instructions. 🙂  So much fun to learn new ways of combining materials. We used printed photos, ink washes and paint. I think they came out pretty awesome!

Day 2:  Flexible, Stuffable Journals with LK Slattery Ludwig

After a very  process driven day before, the second day was pure messiness!! Paint splattering, stencils flying quickly between our hands, paper folding, needles stitching… it was a whirlwind of creativity! I never finished the complete book, but I did finish the canvas cover, and many many amazing painted papers. I had a blast.

Day 3: Obsession or Collection with Roxanne Padgett.

Awesome culmination of a lot of techniques. We made a small book, stitched up some inside pages, and even made our own beads to string onto the spine of the book. I almost finished, but not quite! I had brought many papers and images I had collected over the years and was able to mesh them all together!

Earlier that morning, I had met a few other ladies down at the beach to take a walk thorough the salty air before the days classes began. The shore was strewn with driftwood and rocks… the fog was just starting to lift, it was very peaceful. I didn’t have my camera, but I was able to save my ocean memories by working in sand, seaweed, and driftwood to the books pages.

I’ll end this with a few sketches I did when I got home. After a few days away from routine, it was hard not to daydream about the misty hills and warm cozy classrooms buzzing with creativity!

Happy Creating…Stay Inspired! 🙂

Spread 005 – Rainbows

Canvas, Acrylic Paints, Printed images, magazine images, pastels, ink

“Dare to reach out your hand into the darkness, to pull another hand into the light.” ~Norman B. Rice

This spread is a bit darker than the other ones, but was very meaningful to create. I’ve found certain dreams and instincts are hard to express in words. Through art journaling, I combine unexpected imagery, words and colors to create more powerful and personally meaningful images of my own experiences.

Spread 004 – My Zen

Old personal illustrations, Acrylic Paints, various papers, pastels, ink

We all need more peaceful moments in our lives…and there are many ways to find it. I happened to find it here, in the pages of my journal. I decided to combine some of my old illustrations with personally meaningful imagery and personal photos, and all of the sudden it was there – my own personal zen space.

Where is your zen space? Share a link, I’d love to know.

Spread – 003 A Family Tree of Sorts

Printed Family photos, Acrylic Paints & Ink

This is a family tree of sorts, from both sides of my family.  This tree has so many many more branches to fill in, each with their own stories. I wonder if I extended the roots down or out, where they would go, and who would I meet?  I wonder about my roots, even the nearest branches are still a mystery to me. For now, details are cloudy and silent images remain. I hope to fill in this tree and give voices to the photos.

How do you celebrate your family tree?  Send me a link and let me know how you save your history and create your own family tree.

Spread 002 – Welcoming Fall

Origami Paper, Other Decorative Papers, Acrylic Paints, Japanese Maple Leaves, Other Leaves

I’ve saved in this journal spread some of the last green leaves of the season… There’s no denying it anymore… the leaves are changing, the rain has arrived. The air is getting crisper and cooler… hot soups and teas are beckoning. The garden greens are loving the cooler air, while tree leaves are changing from green to gold, orange to red… New colors are emerging as others fade to the background and I welcome them! How do you welcome the fall?

Japanese Maple, right after the first of the fall rains.

(do you see the red spider in it’s web right in the middle branches?)

Spread 001 – A Gardeners Heart

(click on images for larger view)

Garden Soil, Acrylic Paints, decorative papers, seed packets, vegetable seeds, plant leaves & ink

Inspired by hours of work in my garden, amongst the soil, plants and sun. The writing in this spread is of the following partial poem:

“The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,–
One is nearer God’s heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.

For He broke it for us in a garden
Under the olive-trees
Where the angel of strength was the warden
And the soul of the world found ease.”

~ by Dorothy Frances Gurney

The Full poem can be seen on Frary’s Fresh Flowers blog  here

I took these photos just a few days ago, on what ended up being the last full day of sun here in Oregon. The fall weather has arrived and the plants and earth are soaking up the rain.

She had a Bone to Pick With Them

Several months back I was asked to participate in a local community project, The She Project. Its a wonderfully inclusive and creative project and you can find details here.

All participants were given a short sentence or prompt, and given two hours to create a response. There were no strict rules execpt that it had to be 8×10. How wonderfully free!

The quote I was given was “She had a Bone to Pick with Them”

My friend and I got together in my garage studio, put on good music and went to work!

Below was my submission.

Image

The show was really awesome, with a vast array of responses, through imagery, 3-D work and more. It was all so amazing to look at.

Here are a few photos from the show, I only took a few shots, but I could have taken a photo of each of them, they were each so unique!
