Location location location

Back in September of 2017 I moved studios yet again! 😀 I had the opportunity to join up with Evil Eye Studios artists in Downtown Corvallis, on 5th Street.

I feel so lucky to join the talented artists in this studio and the space is great! We share a large space with a great little front room used for shows and displaying our work. Oh, not to mention a great gold retro couch.

We’ve already done a few Pop up shows and ArtWalks and its been great. I love working around other artists.  When I can hear the hustle and bustle it just puts me in the zone.

Here are a few images of my space below. I’ve had a lot of fun decorating it with my own art and some friends work too.

The Place I’ve Been Before

wisteriamountain_rachelurista

The Place I’ve Been Before, by Rachel Urista, 2017   Acrylics, spray paint, origami papers, acrylic markers, colored pencil, oil pastel on birchwood panel.

This is the first finished painting from the batch of four 48″x48″ panels I’m working on. Rather large and heavy for me- but I felt the deep need to work larger than I have before.

The piece went through many transformations, as much of my work does. It moved from abstract color, texture and expression, to cities in the wind, to mountains where the wisteria grow, and sacred shrines are hidden. I felt the sense of place and atmosphere come together with this one- and felt it was a space I know. Curious feeling! Though not unknown, perhaps, by other artists and poets, whose work carries them to a certain obscure, yet familiar territory.

Original Art Sale | Holiday Gifts

Hope everyone is having a great Holiday season and staying warm!

Looking for a Holiday Gift? Here at Artful Journeys, I have the solution!  Beautiful paintings at an affordable price. Each piece is a hand painted original and no two are alike.

Each is a mix of vintage papers and prints, layered with several ink washes. Then I lovingly paint a favorite scene from my beloved Oregon, from the coast to the mountains, lakes to valleys. Each one is etched with words of intent, original poetry and musings. Lastly, whimsical tree figures add grace and personality to each landscape.

Temporary Artists’ Guild Sale

Screen shot 2013-04-10 at 5.22.17 PMJust a few weeks ago, the newest Art Guild in Corvallis had an art sale and show. I am proud to share that I am one of the newest members of the Temporary Artists’ Guild in Corvallis. This is a great bunch. I am so grateful for this organization-meeting like-minded people and sharing resources and inspiration is invaluable. I so excited about the future as the Guild builds and grows. Check us out at http://temporaryartists.org/

Below are pictures of my table at the Temporary Artists’ Guild sale a few weeks ago. I had an amazing time meeting more members of our community and chatting about my art. Many new projects are in the works, including LIVE painting this Saturday at Imagine Coffee in Corvallis at 7pm, and many more exhibits, art sales and classes!

April Showers…Bring May Flowers!

<a

Its officially Spring in the Valley!! Flowers are blooming all over, new leaves are breaking through the soil and bursting off of branches! Who can’t be inspired and affected by it all?  🙂

Check out these 12x12s and 20x20s at Sonia’s Shop STASH downtown. Take a peek in the store window, you’ll see her store is in bloom too!

Already can’t wait to continue with these bright lovely textural pieces!

Whats next? The Rhodies, Camelias, Tulips? Whats your favorite flower?

Spring Canvases

4″ x 4″ each, Acrylic and Ink

I’ve been working away in my new garage studio and now the pieces are finally out in the sun and for sale at  STASH downtown Corvallis!

As plants and flowers all around me begin to bloom, my eyes soak in all the colors and textures. I love creating these tiny worlds, all the color and feeling of a spring day, contained in a 4″ square!

I am working on more sizes, variety and magnets!  Until then, I hope these provide you a little sunshine and spring color on  those grey days between the sunny ones!

Making Space

Everyone needs personal space. For creative types, we may sometimes need a little more  space…

Its been months since I had that space, since we’ve been packed and moved and now unpacking. It took about 4 hours, but I’ve made decent progress on creating my studio in our garage!

As I was sweeping, lifting, moving and shuffling furniture, boxes and the like, it occurred to me that I was doing more than just creating a physical art space- I was also creating mental space. With this space comes my commitment to carving out more creative time in my life, more contemplative, quite times for myself. Here in this garage, I hope to “check in” more often with myself, my intentions, my creativity and thus aid in my grounding, regrouping and revitalizing.

…………………………………………

Here’s what I had to start with: 1/2 a one car garage, with no insulation 🙂 But I think I’m going to like it, and am so grateful for so much creative space!

Here are a few pics in progress.  I would not let go of the dusty roll of 6×9′ linoleum I’ve had since 2008. It went along with me on all four of my moves since – from across states to across town, and all around. Looking back it seems silly to tote around that roll for so long, but I bought it to create a small painting space at my first tiny apartment and kept that dream with me (along with the dusty linoleum!)

Now its finally in place!

(the linoleum!)

Here is the overall half of the garage by the end of the day…. it still needs more organizing, maybe some wall shelves, and more decorations but it’s a great start!

I placed my drafting table under the window for some illustration space…

On the far right is a small prep station that was in the garage when we got here. It has a few wall shelves and has re-purposed old kitchen cabinets and a section of the kitchen counter.

In the center I made an area for messy paint and my easel! So happy to see the easel out for good, not folded up and collecting cobwebs in the corner!

To the left of the easel is my large black desk; the perfect space for multiple small paintings and more detailed work.

I can’t wait to complete my work day tomorrow so I can retreat to this desk with a mug of hot tea and my paints! 😀

Here’s to making space!

Mini Candy Canvases

Sometimes, you just have to let the color carry you away….. The colors of fall and the vividness is all around me here in the Willamette Valley.

As I was painting these I was reminded of bright, sweet petite fours…Yum! Thus, these little ones are my “Candy Canvases.”  This newest batch is available at STASH in downtown Corvallis.

Each of these are 3.5″ x 3.5″ and 1.25″ thick canvas, original paintings. Mix n Match, build your own collage… 🙂

Available at STASH in downtown Corvallis.

La Pine Dancer Painting

Every painting starts with an experience… this one started in Bend this summer, while on a visit with my Aunt. This point is somewhere between Bend, OR and LaPine, OR. We took a new back road and ended up here! What a great surprise!

Though the real scene was more vibrant and bold, I painted from the calm serene feeling I had from the bend in the river. Though the water was almost at a standstill, the tree here seemed to be full of movement… bending slightly over the cliff to the river, it seemed to be frozen in a modern dance pose… The twisting grace of the roots and the texture of the trunk fascinated me!

The painting is acrylic and modeling paste, fiber paste and raised paper. Below are some photos of the process of the painting. I always enjoy reviewing how a painting progresses, and would like to share it with you too.
