The Place I’ve Been Before

wisteriamountain_rachelurista

The Place I’ve Been Before, by Rachel Urista, 2017   Acrylics, spray paint, origami papers, acrylic markers, colored pencil, oil pastel on birchwood panel.

This is the first finished painting from the batch of four 48″x48″ panels I’m working on. Rather large and heavy for me- but I felt the deep need to work larger than I have before.

The piece went through many transformations, as much of my work does. It moved from abstract color, texture and expression, to cities in the wind, to mountains where the wisteria grow, and sacred shrines are hidden. I felt the sense of place and atmosphere come together with this one- and felt it was a space I know. Curious feeling! Though not unknown, perhaps, by other artists and poets, whose work carries them to a certain obscure, yet familiar territory.

Sketchbook Sundays

“Serious art is born from serious play.”

(Julia Cameron-An Artists Way)

I think this is especially true of my sketchbook. It is not necessarily where I do art journaling…rather, these are places I work out ideas and create space for exploration.

A few months ago, I picked up one brown marker and started filling in a blank journal. I had to find my own way to become comfortable with writing. I found that I am naturally drawn to and work well with symbols, backwards writing and upside down writing. Words I know are present, but a bit difficult to read. I know what is there, but it is not meant for everyone to read, more to experience the feelings from it.  Using limited colors on a few pages, I concealed and revealed as I wished…

More flowed through me than I had expected or been quite prepared for… I have filled a sketchbook in little over 3 months. Unheard of for me. Until now.

Finding this complimentary journaling practice has been a deeply enriching experience. In order to honor this practice, I am starting “Sketchbook Sundays” where each Sunday I will post a page from my sketchbook, sharing with you a sneek peek into the pages of my sketchbooks.

I am looking forward to hearing about your sketchbook practices. Do you have separate sketchbooks? Are they themed? Do you write or just doodle? Do you use them for springboards for your art? Would love to hear about your practices, please comment below!

Rainbows in the Dark

JournalSpread-RainbowsintheDark
OfRainbowsCLOSE_JournalSpread_Fall2013OfRainbows_JournalSpread_Fall2013Journal Spread; Pastels, Marker, ink, and Black Gesso.

I started this journal spread, using pastels and thin ink pens back in the Summer of 2012 but struggled to finish it – so closed the book…so to speak.

I had all but forgotten about this spread until there came an evening, a few months ago, when my friend had some leftover black gesso and a I had a bit of bravery on hand…

This particular combination lead to something remarkable, expressive and symbolic.

Original Art Sale | Holiday Gifts

Hope everyone is having a great Holiday season and staying warm!

Looking for a Holiday Gift? Here at Artful Journeys, I have the solution!  Beautiful paintings at an affordable price. Each piece is a hand painted original and no two are alike.

Each is a mix of vintage papers and prints, layered with several ink washes. Then I lovingly paint a favorite scene from my beloved Oregon, from the coast to the mountains, lakes to valleys. Each one is etched with words of intent, original poetry and musings. Lastly, whimsical tree figures add grace and personality to each landscape.

The Mighty Oaks

While working on my latest art project, I decided to soak in some sun and inspiration, and also study my topic (Trees!) up close! Come take a walk with me!

Enjoy the grace and beauty, personality and strength of these mighty and ancient oaks.

And back in the studio… a visitor appeared amongst my tree study!

TreeSpirit

There came a sense of humor in this sketch as I hung “木” Trees and “林” forests in her branches. Her whimsical face reminds me to enjoy the season; to look closer when I am on my nature walks; notice the rainbows of leaves drifting down, see how the wind makes shadows dance in the approaching fall storms, and admire the jarring contrasts of brilliant orange trees against the deep grey sky.

Enjoy this wonderful Fall season and of course, the company of Trees!

41st Annual Corvallis Fall Festival

RachelsFFDisplay4

This weekend, I had the honor of participating in the 41st Corvallis Fall Festival with the Temporary Artists’ Guild.  Although the weather was so severe the second day was canceled, we had a good turn out Saturday and it was wonderful to meet new people and share my work.

Our booth displayed the works of 9 local artists in the guild. Here are a few shots below of our booth, and a few close ups of my display.

Each painting is unique, with layers and layers of vintage papers, ink washes, acrylics, colored pencil, graphite and gel pens.

Layer upon layer I worked, creating a little piece of Oregon on each canvas. Each scene is a reflection of my time spent on the Coast and also in Central Oregon in the Cascade Mountain Range. Travels in this state are breathtaking and inspiring and I hope my pieces can share a bit of my world.

Growing a Tree – Art Journaling Class

Photo May 31, 3 38 38 PM

This was a class  I taught earlier this summer at The Drawing Board in downtown Corvallis.  I had so much fun, we had so much fun! I loved seeing how students took the instructions and ran with it, creating their own unique pieces…

How expressive and freeing it can be to let go of the outcome, and just create. Sharing this love of journaling and giving others the tools and confidence to journal on their own was a blast!

TreesJournalClassStudentsWorkPhoto May 31, 1 54 09 PM

Students work was great! They really got into it!

Photo May 31, 3 36 27 PM

Below are a few images showing some of the basic steps… This was first taught to me by Orly Avineri, but I have made my own modifications. Check out her blog to see her fabulous work!
IMG_5732

Paint, and adding texture. Shown here with brush strokes and a dry paper towel. I try to choose contrasting colors, and limit it to 2-3 colors.

IMG_5737

Over the paint, I layered some papers and did a light wash to tie the whole thing together….You can see the paper underneath the ink in the photo below.

Next, pour, splash, scratch out the wet ink! Have fun, be spontaneous, let go and let the ink do its thing!
IMG_5782

Glueing in leaves, inking on top and dotting more paint. Again, I limited my paint colors, to match the original underpainting colors and tie it all in together.IMG_5788

Once it dries, I just keep layering ink and marker to define leaves and other fine details. Have fun and make it your own!

Hope this sparks an idea for you. Happy Journaling!

Majestic Theater Art Show

If you find yourself in downtown Corvallis this week, stop in at The Majestic Theater and see my show. I have several original art journal pages up and new mixed media works as well.

We had a great little opening event this past Friday, where I got to meet many wonderful new people, who are so inspiring. It was so sweet to also see many familiar faces too. Many thanks to all who came out and saw the show!

I had several original art journals on display too and had a lot of fun doing some live painting! The show will be up just a little longer, July 29th, so be sure to stop in this week!

Stay tuned for upcoming art shows and chances to see me live paint! I will have a show up in September also in downtown Corvallis, and will have original works up this October at The Beanery on 9th street.

Spring/Summer Classes @ The Drawing Board-an Update

I wanted to share a few examples of the type of work we’ll do in my classes this summer at The Drawing Board in Corvallis, Oregon.

This Friday, May 31st, I’ll be sharing with you my journey with Art Journaling and we’ll dig right in and get our hands dirty! Below are some examples of what we’ll be working on. All you need to bring is a journal, at least ~9’x5″ and unlined. Please bring a size you feel comfortable with. We’ll build up layers of paint, ink paper and have fun adding our personal touches with words and make our own Trees of Plenty! Get ready to get your creative juices flowing! If you can’t make this one, mark your calendar for Friday, July 12th also at 1pm!

The next Acrylic Painting class, Friday, June 14th will now be an organic, mixed media feel…building up layers of paint and paper, graphite and oil pastels on our wood boards or canvases. Below are some examples! This approach is uplifting, energizing and sooo much fun! Wont you join me?

HaruYama_Day1 HaruYama_CloseUp AcrylicMixMedia_RachelAcrylicMixMedia_Rachel_Close1 Thanks for joining me! I look forward to creating together! Please don’t hesitate to email or message me with any questions you may have!
