Nature of my Journal

JournalGems3_UristaJournalGems_UristaJournalGems2_Urista

Sunny days encourage me to venture outside, my  journal pages seeking sunlight. As energizing as spring and summer can be, it is also a time to enjoy the long summer days, pause in the shade of a tree, admire the millions of shades of green in the forest and garden, and enjoy natures creations. Summer colors and textures make their way into my journal, a collection of my observations and inner journeys.

This is the state of my journal this summer – soft paint splattered cover, insides bulging with almost one year worth of art, words, expression, tassels dangling like familiar jewelry, pages pliable, worn and loved… and now, witnessed by the garden,  summer sunlight and you.

Let Go

ImagineCoffeePainting_Working3_RUrista ImagineCoffeePainting_Working2_RUrista

There are times when I need to get out of my own art routine…I savor moments painting and creating in my journals. Yet there are times when I feel I need to switch it up, work in a completely new manner, and go with the inspiration of the day.

On this particular night, a few weeks ago, I packed up a few sheets of paper, a few paints and pastels, my rather large jar of black gesso, and headed out to meet fellow artist friend at our local coffee shop. I had nothing in mind, no preconceived ideas. I just knew I needed to let something out. I needed to move, to stand, use my entire arms in long sweeping motions and short choppy ones and just make marks on the paper.

Working in this manner, I tapped into my emotions, letting them guide my movements, and then let them go. Out of chaos emerged several symbols and eventually a beautiful, strong and fierce face. Who knew when I started what the final painting was going to reveal?

Do you have a method for “letting go” and a form of creating which has no rules? Where you can be free from constraint? I’d love to hear about your process.

A Journey begins • Collaboration with Open Soul Communication

Open Soul Communication

I am excited to begin this journey with Open Soul Communications and offer you Open Soul Painting Workshops, coming soon!

Come out today to their FREE event: http://opensoulcommunication.wordpress.com/free-event1/   Food, fun, and information on the soul supportive services offered.

As a classically trained artist, I became shut-down by all the rules and set standards. When I discovered mixed media painting and art journaling, I started to open up again creatively…

Since I started teaching workshops in art journaling, I have seen people transformed, just by having the space and permission to create – without judgement, without pressure. I saw students reconnect to their creative side and begin to open up.

Once you start opening up in one area of your life, other areas begin to open as well and growth can occur. That is why collaborating with Open Soul Communication is the perfect match!

Thank you, Open Soul Communications, for this amazing opportunity! I am looking forward to our journey together!

Watch for details on Open Soul Painting Workshops! Coming soon!

41st Annual Corvallis Fall Festival

RachelsFFDisplay4

This weekend, I had the honor of participating in the 41st Corvallis Fall Festival with the Temporary Artists’ Guild.  Although the weather was so severe the second day was canceled, we had a good turn out Saturday and it was wonderful to meet new people and share my work.

Our booth displayed the works of 9 local artists in the guild. Here are a few shots below of our booth, and a few close ups of my display.

Each painting is unique, with layers and layers of vintage papers, ink washes, acrylics, colored pencil, graphite and gel pens.

Layer upon layer I worked, creating a little piece of Oregon on each canvas. Each scene is a reflection of my time spent on the Coast and also in Central Oregon in the Cascade Mountain Range. Travels in this state are breathtaking and inspiring and I hope my pieces can share a bit of my world.

Sakura Tree Painting 桜

The Sakura Painting is complete! 😀 I wanted to share some of the details.

I used pine cones and twigs to create organic textures for the blossoms, and built up the tree using various papers and fiber paste. The glass beads are hand placed and individually glued. I think all of this resulted in a highly textured dynamic piece! I am so pleased with the outcome, it felt like the tree was coming to life!

Plein Air Painting: The Search for the River

A friend and I set out with a small pack of art supplies to find the river….

AlbanySunset

Down dirt roads, through grassy fields, and mazes of tangled trees, we walked… I gathered sticks and leaves and admired the beauty of mother natures colors.  Finally we got closer, and you can smell the dampness, and feel the undergrowth cool and thicken…

We parted ways and sat along the banks of the Willamette River, lost in the colors and textures and sounds of the rushing water.  I did a little watercolor painting and enjoyed the feeling of the earth below my feet….below are a few of the treasures from the day…
