April Workshop • Exploring Art Journaling at Studio262

Excited to announce I’ll be teaching an Art Journal workshop this April at Studio262 in Corvallis. I’ve taken a short sabbatical from teaching this past fall and winter, feeling recharged and ready to go! This one is based off a fun and playful class I taught last year. We used our hands to paint, mixed and glued…and had a bunch of fun!

This April, we’ll explore mixed media in the form of art journaling. Its easier than you think! We’ll go step by step and play with mixing acrylic paints, papers, graphite and oil pastels and make textures and shapes.

Learn about the practice of art journaling and complete one spread during the class. Please bring your own journal or sketchbook. All other materials provided.

Workshop Fee is $20. Ages 14 to adult. Min. 3, Max 12 students. Pre-registration is required.

21 Secrets Online Course- A Sneek Peek!!

I have been away from blog and Facebook for a little while… That is because I have been working on creating something very exciting…my portion of  the 21 Secrets online class “Dream Voyages”

In my course we will voyage into our dreams!  First we’ll create richly layered backgrounds to create what I call dreamscapes. We will further explore this land by working with images, adding symbolic writing and start to unlock the messages they hold.  Wont you join me?

Dreams • Journal Page

I have been fascinated with dreams since I was a young child. I still have vivid recollections of dreams from age 5 on. I religiously kept a dream journal in middle school and high school, something I still practice today (though with less frequency).

Dreams give us rich language of colors, themes, images, majestic landscapes, and alternate realities.  Fleeting, intangible, powerful, moving, we have much to learn from our dreams….but how do you capture a dream? Is it a color, a scent? An image? All of the above?

Spring Play

I just love watching my students work. The brushes dancing, the color flying the hands moving… the creativity flowing.

In the last workshop we experimented with movements big and small in our pages. We did a fun warm up exercise using just black gesso and a brush. Nothing to do but make marks on the page, go with the flow and start moving!

After that we all did some marvelous layering with pastels, spray inks, stencils and ink. Love the bright spring colors and playful energy in all their pages.

Journal Spread • Rainbows Under Water

In this spread, I worked with layers of pastel, spray inks, gel pens and black gesso. We’ll work with these materials in this Saturdays Art Journal Workshop at Imagine Coffee.

Woven into the layers of pastel and spray ink are words from another journal of mine- one solely dedicated to poetry, dreams and ideas.  The words in this spread are about the buoyancy of love, its resilience, and its lightness even in the heaviest of moments.

I’d like to swim amongst the background and climb out to rest upon the blossoms, and look into the stars…Care to join me? 🙂

As a classically trained artist, I became shut-down by all the rules and set standards. When I discovered mixed media painting and art journaling, I started to open up again creatively…

Since I started teaching workshops in art journaling, I have seen people transformed, just by having the space and permission to create – without judgement, without pressure. I saw students reconnect to their creative side and begin to open up.

Once you start opening up in one area of your life, other areas begin to open as well and growth can occur. That is why collaborating with Open Soul Communication is the perfect match!

Workshop Inspiration!

Workshop #2 of the year, “RECLAIM”

Connection, energy and inspiration fueled the day and creative sparks were flying!

Each student brought joy, energy and inspiration to the group.

It was particularly joyful to have those who had never done Art Journaling before. They were bold, brave and lent a fresh energy. Meeting friends I’d before only know online was another highlight of the day.  Meeting in person was a blast!

In hearing my students, it is becoming clearer that there is a real need to carve out space for our creative selves to expand. Our creative urges are not going to go away. We are, by nature, creative beings, and ignoring this urge is unhealthy.

Art journaling has the potential to open up this creativity, allowing us space and time to reconnect to this part of ourselves.  From simple to complex prompts and techniques, Art Journaling can open a door towards self-discovery and healing. I sincerely look forward to the next workshop, for the chance to continue to create space for each student to explore their creative self.

Isn’t it awesome how I only had a few colors, yet everyone’s pages look uniquely their own!

Journal Spread: Messages Amidst Mess

Playing in the paint…dab, smear, splatter. Getting emotions out on paper, releasing the days stress. What first appears as a mess, sharpens. Images start to emerge. Narratives develop naturally. Messages surface, stop and reflect. Sometimes when emotions and life seem messy, there are messages for us to find within them.

Journal Spread: Dance Your Fingers

Dance your fingers upon the page.

Slap, pound, push the paint to the beat of the drum. Freed from the brush. Smudge, smear. Tenderly I feel out the edges around each fingertip. Words float in, and float out. Some stay. A small mountain range emerges from the edge of the page and stretches out. Rhythmic strokes, circular dance.  One hand, then two, then three emerge…Weave… weave…weave. The painted pages smile, they are the sun shinning forth from my hands.
